“First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern.” (1) – Bill Gates
While artificial intelligence is all over the media and causing justifiably some anxiety for people fearing an impending robot uprising, there is an easy non-threatening application of a precursor of AI that can help you migrate to SAP HANA.
Currently, the term ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI) is with increasing frequency in the news. The popular HBO show ‘Westworld’ as well as the famous Netflix series “Person of Interest” certainly brought the topic into the focus of the general public.
Originally, the term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ was coined 1955, which is commonly taken as the birthday of the scientific field (2). But already in 1950, Alan Turing had some very fundamental thoughts regarding the direction that the field will take, which led to the now famous Turing-Test.
Genie in a bottle
The field of Artificial Intelligence has definitely matured in the time since, which is easily evidenced by having its own specific journal (3). Critics might say that they don’t care if a machine beats humans playing Chess, Jeopardy, GO or most recently Poker (4). But besides the underlying achievements that make these things possible there are some very practical applications.
By now deep learning algorithms are able to better identify skin cancer than any human dermatologist could (5). But also its application in the area of personal assistants (e.g. Siri, Cortana, Amazon Echo, Google Assistant) is making huge leaps. It is probably the latter that inspires worry in some, where this path might lead us. And you would not be alone in your worry. Prominent thinkers such as Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Stephen Hawking have warned about artificial intelligence (6).
So can Siri help you migrate to SAP HANA?
Well, no, at least not yet. The most useful I got out of Siri in that regard is where to “sap honey in the area around you”. Luckily there is already an alternative in smartShift Technologies.
smartShift has built its technology on the principle of automation long time before AI was as hip as today. Automation is essentially the first step of artificial intelligence and very unlikely to cause the robot apocalypse. The idea is to eliminate repetitive, mass tasks that keep you from performing the tasks that really matter. Think of your dishwasher, vacuum robot, laundry machine or gardening robot.
smartShift increases quality shortens timelines and allows to focus
One of the visionary thinkers of our time, Elon Musk, summarizes it nicely “People have time to do other things, more complex things, more interesting things” (7). And that is exactly what you need to do when going to SAP HANA, be it Suite on HANA or S/4.
Particularly in the Custom Code, you will be faced with thousands of changes that need to be made. In the case of optimizing your custom code, we are talking issues in the five-digit area. While these are important and a large number of these changes are mandatory, they fit the profile of tasks that automation can perform perfectly.
Does this mean you can migrate to S/4 with a press of a button? Certainly not. But it means that smartShift can solve a major headache for you with ease, to allow you to focus on the things that really matter. See us as your cleaning robot for your SAP system. We will support you in rebuilding your house, but our strength is in performing all these things that only cost you time, resources and brainpower without adding value.
